Intro
There so many things that separates 5.0s and pros from 4.5s and below. You would easily name consistency and anticipation among them. But if you ask me what one shot really makes the difference, I would say it is 4th shot. If you played against 5.0s in a tournament, you noticed how hard it is to get to the kitchen line and hence get any chance to score. The same 3rd shot drop that brings you every time to the kitchen against equal level players seems not to work against these 5.0 guys. Every time your shot gets attacked and you just cannot make it to the kitchen line. And the reason for that aggressive is 4th shot roll.
What is 4th shot roll?
This is a shot you want to use against your opponents 3rd shot drop. Ideally you want to hit it from the air before the bounce, but it will also work after the bounce if the ball comes high enough. The idea is to return the ball with high pace with significant spin. The spin has two merits: it allows to hit the ball harder not being afraid it would fly out, and heavy spin shot produces irregular ball bounce, which greatly complicates defense.
How to hit it?
There is a forehand roll and a backhand roll. The forehand one is pretty common and easier to perform. What’s common between this shots?
First mistake, that 4.5s and lower players make: they let too many drop shots bounce losing time and allowing opponents to advance. To be more aggressive you should stay as close to the kitchen line as possible, get down, and extend yourself into the kitchen as much as you can. You even can stay on one foot using another one as a counterbalance.
Another thing, they just push the ball flat without much spin. This limits the pace they can put on the ball without the risk of hitting it out. Also flat ball is much easier to defend. So it works well if the ball is higher than the net at the moment they hit it. To add topspin you need to brush the ball up when you hit it. There are many ways to learn topspin, but we would recommend to use a bike wheel like this (show) or TopSpinPro (show, you can find a link in the description).
Also for both forehand and especially backhand roll you will need stronger wrist and forearm muscles. In our opinion this tool is one of the best (show).
Forehand roll
Show how to hit: above the net (maximum extent to the kitchen, straight legs), below the net (low position, bent knees, hit from below the ball). Help with your hips.
Backhand roll
Show how to hit: above the net (this one is tricky, use your whole body to increase power, try to add side spin to make it really hard for your opponents), below the net (low position, bent knees, hit from below the ball, use your wrist for spin, your arm and body for power).
Outro
Now, when you learned it, you are one step closer to 5.0. Go try it with your friends. You will be amazed how consistently this shot leads to side-out.
I started this channel quite by accident, I was recording my games to do film study and get better. I did not have time or money for lessons from pro pickleball coach, so I started watching all my screwups. People that I was playing with started to ask if they could watch too and I said sure. That helped all of us a lot to improve our game, strategy, mental toughness, and techniques. Now we have new pickleball videos published several times a week. We occasionally have pro pickleball players on the channel. Mostly its non pro pickleball players on their quest to 5.0 pickleball. We have all levels come through the channel, but we concentrate on the 4.0 pickleball, 4.5 pickleball and up to 5.5 pickleball with the pros.
