In this video we clarify the two types of underspin: 1- the arcing underspin that will brake or checkup and 2- the drive underspin that will skid on the court and stay low (generally seen as a return of serve shot).

It is important to have a good understanding of the different spins that are used in the game so that you can move accordingly.

Want to know how to hit a third shot drop (long dink) in pickleball? In this video you can learn from our breakdown of Matt's mechanically simple ad consistent third shot drop. Matt can execute the same shot over and over again and, because the shot does not have many moving parts, it is not subject to error.

In this series we will be breaking down particular shots at which certain players excel. These are not “how to” videos but rather videos to highlight aspects of the shots so that you can perhaps incorporate some of them and improve your shot repertoire.

How do you stand to start your pickleball serve? Here we break it down for you.

It is important to have proper foot position in order to generate sufficient power to get your pickleball serve deep. While we are not concerned with pickleball serve speed for Project 4.0, we are concerned with serve depth. You will need to be able to transfer enough energy into the ball in order to send that ball deep. And starting foot position will help you accomplish that goal.

This is part of our pickleball stroke mechanics video series for Project 4.0.

The 3 common pickleball mistakes we cover in this pickleball video affect all players but are particularly applicable to tennis players who are now adding pickleball to their repertoire (or changing completely over).

We're gonna cover three game-changing areas:

Volley Technique: You need to be aware of the classic tennis-to-pickleball mistakes, especially when it comes to the volley.

Court Size & Out Balls: Ever think about the difference in court sizes? Well, we did! We'll show you how to adjust your instincts and make wiser choices when the ball comes at you. Hello, smaller court!

The Tennis Mindset on a Pickleball Court: Pickleball is not mini-tennis. Hitting hard might work at the onset, but it's not a strategy for long-term growth.

So if you're a tennis player itching to rock at pickleball or just adding it to your weekly schedule, these tips will keep you from making typical transition mistakes.

0:00 Introduction to the 3 Errors from Tennis to Pickleball
0:12 Tip No. 1 - how to properly hit the pickleball volley
1:50 Tip No. 2 - proper strategy based on the pickleball court size
2:51 Tip No. 3 - play pickleball rather than tennis

As the pickleball return team, you want to keep the serve team back at the baseline. As the pickleball serve team, if you are in trouble, you do not want to expose your feet to attack. A good example of a pickleball punch volley is an added bonus in this point breakdown.

This is part of our Project 4.0 point breakdown video series where we break down a pickleball point to look at optimal and not as optimal play so that we can improve our games.

A pickleball stroke has three parts: backswing (see below), point of contact (when you hit the ball), and follow through (after you have made contact with the ball).

In a prior video, linked below, we suggested that by mastering the follow through you could greatly improve your pickleball play. There was some resistance to this concept. The counterargument was primarily that because the ball has left the paddle the remaining follow through was not relevant to the ball's trajectory. The argument continues that the only relevant part of the pickleball stroke is the point where the paddle makes contact with the ball (the point of contact) and the paddle face angle at that point.

In this video we demonstrate the effect of the paddle follow through on the shot and how varying the follow through impacts the ball's trajectory. We also show how you can use the follow through to shape your pickleball shot and help with the service yips.

In our last video (find it here: https://youtu.be/q2vFlCg76cI) we covered pickleball spins and their real impact on your shots. Will a spin shot give you a small marginal advantage? Perhaps. But there are costs associated with learning and hitting with spins. Check out Video 1 in this series to learn more about whether spins are right for your game.

In this week’s video, we cover a common misconception about how to impart spin onto the pickleball. This pickleball error can cause you to make many errors in your game and can result in your game moving backward – actually deteriorating. We made this pickleball video because we have seen too many players be negatively affected by this incorrect technique.

It is important to remember that pickleball is not tennis. The solid pickleball paddle and smooth hard pickleball are hugely different from the strung racket and fuzzy yellow ball used in tennis. Thus, the shot techniques used by tennis players to impart topspin to their shots do not translate onto the pickleball court. The idea of brushing up on the ball, which is of great value in tennis, is counterproductive in pickleball.

Want to be clear on three points:

1. Pretty much every shot you hit in pickleball will impart some spin to the ball. It is just how things work. As the paddle makes contact and pushes forward and through the ball to propel the ball along its intended shot trajectory, some of that paddle motion will make the ball (a sphere) spin in some direction.

Our focus in this video series is on players who are trying to impart extra spin to the ball. They move their paddle in a way that they think is necessary to impart that certain spin. This is where the additional errors stem from.

2. We are NOT saying that spins have no place in our game. Spins do, in fact, have a place in pickleball. What we are saying is:
a. any extra or additional spins that players seek to impart is generally not where they need to spend their time right now. There are 5-10-100 things that most players can spend their time on that are more productive for them and their games than learning to spin (NOTE – if you already know how to spin the ball, then go for it, just see b, below first).
b. Adding extra or additional spin to the ball can, and most often does, result in an increase in errors in a player’s shots. This is because the player’s shot mechanics have increased variability – more moving parts. So – if you are going to add additional spin to your shots you should expect to have more variability in your shots – when compared to the same shot without the extra spin motion.

3. Have fun out there. The advice we provide is intended to give you the information that will give you the best results when you play. For example, less variability = less errors = more won rallies. BUT … there are other considerations in the real world. If spinning the ball like crazy makes you happy, then by all means do it. Just make sure your expectations align with your chosen way of playing pickleball. More paddle motion (from the added spin) = more variability = more errors. That is the tradeoff and our job as your source for pickleball knowledge is to provide you with accurate information so that you can make informed decisions about how you play pickleball.

All this said, brushing up on a pickleball with a hard paddle will not give the you results you are looking for. If you are trying to impart spins into your shots by using the erroneous shot mechanics demonstrated in this video, we recommend pausing your work. Wait until you have a chance to watch Video 3 in this series, where we show you the proper technique to hit a spin shot in pickleball.

We also recommend watching (or rewatching) Video 1 in this series. It answers the question: Are spins worth it?

0:00 Introduction to Video 2 of the Pickleball Spins Series
0:43 Errors in hitting a Pickleball Topspin Shot
2:05 The error from brushing across the pickleball
2:59 Brushing the ball creates uncertainty in your shot

Adding extra spin to the pickleball is not right for every pickleball player. Even if it is, there is a cost to adding spins to your pickleball game: (1) there are likely other shots and strategies that will be more beneficial to your game and results that you will not be working on, and (2) your consistency will suffer (you will make more errors on the pickleball court).

Most pickleball players at some point want to add spins into their games. The belief is that adding spins is what is missing to help a player “break out.”

This belief is often misplaced and, in fact, adding spins often retards a player’s improvement. Or worse yet, results in deterioration of the player’s game.

In this pickleball video series, we look at spins. The very first topic (covered in Video 1) is to examine whether pickleball spins are really “all that.” What is the actual impact of spin on your pickleball shots? And does this impact merit the time and attention that spins will require to learn in addition to the increase in errors from the added variability of spins in your shots. Once you watch the video you will be better informed as to whether spins are worth adding to your pickleball game.

The second video covers some common mistakes in how spins are hit by pickleball players. In a nutshell, you cannot use the same techniques used to spin a tennis ball to spin a pickleball. A pickleball paddle is vastly different from a tennis racket, particularly the lack of any strings. And a pickleball is different than a tennis ball, importantly the lack of any felt. In this video, we demonstrate some of the common errors made by pickleball players trying to impart spin onto their shots.

The third video shows the proper technique for applying spin to a pickleball. Rather than brushing the ball tennis style, we show you a technique that respects the nature of a pickleball paddle as well as a pickleball. The technique also provides greater consistency by focusing on getting the ball where you want it to go (including over the net).

It is a fine thing to be able to spin the ball. It is important, however, to know the tradeoffs you are making whenever you try to impart extra spin onto the ball. Even the pros (who can spin the ball as well as anyone) know when to avoid adding spin to the ball – when to hit a more reliable shot: one without spin.

Become an informed pickleball player and you will be able to make better decisions about your pickleball game. We encourage you to watch this entire video to know how to spin the pickleball the right way to enrich your pickleball game strength. This pickleball training video also helps to increase your technique of pickleball spin serve, pickleball spin slow motion, and more. You can also utilize how to backspin, or slice, quite a bit. How to grip the pickleball paddles, pickleball spin return. If you're a beginner pickleball game player then you should consider watching our more videos to know all about the pickleball games, how to play pickleball, and all the beginners to advance level pickleball techniques.

Register for the Miniseries here: https://wearepickleball.com/pillars. Don't miss this!

These 4 pickleball errors are making you lose more games, and more rallies. They all stem from pressing. Essentially it’s pushing too hard. Hitting shots that you don’t need, attacking when an attack isn’t available, playing a hard ball when a soft one will do.

When you find yourself pressing, you are simply trying to do more than the situation requires. That's causing errors in your pickleball game. Errors that are causing you the rally and potentially the game.

Another example is pressing is trying to hit the ball too low to the net. You think you need to hit the pickleball shot really low, really low, to avoid an error, and by doing so, you hit the net. by the net.

Another pickleball error and an example of pressing is attacking where attacks don't exist. The most common situation is when you think there's a hole in the middle, and you go for the hole in the middle. A lot of times that hole is a phantom hole. It doesn't exist. And if you want to check that out, we did a whole game breakdown on that. https://youtu.be/hiL54qx-g3o

Ever "lose" your pickleball serve? It is generally called the yips and here we show you how to get rid of the yips.

If done properly, this drill will help you find your way back to a consistent dependable serve.

Make sure you watch all the way through - this is not a skip around sort of video. Trust me.

Good luck out there!

Popping up your pickleball dinks? It is likely because of your paddle swing. Specifically, too much backswing in your pickleball shots.

Same happens with your pickleball volleys. You are missing them long or into the net - sometimes missing them outright. Too much swing in your shots.
