Every rec play or pickleball tournament has them, players that can hit the ball hard. Often referred to as the pickleball banger. There is a difference between a hard hitter and a banger. A hard hitter uses a combination of hard and soft shots to defeat opponents. A banger is someone who only hits the ball hard.
This proven strategy will combat both the banger and the hard hitter and make your job on the pickleball court easier.

STOP getting killed out there | Pickleball Strategy
A fairly common error is for pickleball players to attack non-existent "gaps" in the opponent's court.
In this video rally breakdown, we share with you a couple of rallies where it looks like there is an opening, but there is not. Avoid getting slammed down the gap in the middle by avoiding off-court (angle) attacks into your opponent's middle.

All right, so I'm going to walk you guys through this; I'll walk you through it as we go. These are two excellent teams. This is a Nationals match. I believe it's 4.5. Smart players on both sides.
Let’s look at the tension or dance between the serve and the return.
The white and red team on this site are trying to solve the puzzle, the initial part of the game, which is getting up to the NVZ. Now it's when they finally get the shot, the lady in white gets the shot that she wants, and now they start coming up. But calmly, moving together.
They make it up, and we are at a neutral rally. This is what we're talking about. If you get to this stage of the rally, you're getting into the meat of the matter. So here you're going to see a dink that goes a little bit high, and then white decides, “OK, let me go.” And she does with a nice body shot here.
Attacking her opponent. And then this rally, we're focusing on movement, but that's a good shot to have.
The ball comes back to sort of oddly, and red has to go get it. White does not just stand there. White moves to cover along the elastic tether. White moves with red, not exactly the same, but moves to the middle.
Because red is off the court, white is the only player left. White basically gets to play singles right now.
Now, red hits a jam shot. Now, this is what we talked about earlier, too. She's in trouble. Reds clearly in trouble here, right the way she's moving. So when she gets to this ball, what she decides to do (and I've done this successfully many times in tournament play and rec play), but basically, she just throws this ball at her opponent into the body.
And jams her opponent. And then that allows white to get set up. Red is going to come back on the court. This is the shot of the rally right here. This shot right here. It's such a beautiful shot by the white player, recognizing that her opponent has not recovered from the last shot. So all of this court is open over here. This player recognizes the open space and then hits this beautiful little dink over here, stressing the other team.
Now, if you remember, what did white do when red got stressed? White came to the middle of the court. Her opponent’s partner, however, does not go to the middle. Her opponent basically stays and keeps her position. That is what opens up that gap that we talked about earlier. So a gap opens between the two players. She moves a little bit there, but not enough. And it's too late now. The player in white, again, a savvy player, is going to put the point away. But she's not going to hit it hard.
She's going to drop it in there. And that's what ends the rally. What you're seeing is you're seeing movement, how moving a player around and by the white player. And a lot of times during play, they want to know one thing: the putaway. We look at this shot, and we say nice shot, and there's nothing wrong with that shot. That's a fine shot. But the nice shot. Is the early masterful placement dink.
This is just finishing. What I tell partners of mine when I have it, my partner hits a shot like the one before that. I said it was a masterful shot, and I put it away. I always say I had the “don't mess it upshot.” Basically, it's a shot that I better not mess up. My partner did all the work right, all the heavy lifting by hitting the really nice shot that set my put away.
But it wasn't my put away that was the key to the rally. The key to the rally was the shot that sets up the put-away.
Good luck out there.

16:37 - Pickleball Conclusion
Once we get the pickleball paddle, we don't give it a second thought. But there are things you can do to improve your current pickleball paddle - the one sitting in your bag. In this video, we go over three things:
1 - how and why to apply an overgrip to your pickleball paddle - prolong the life of the grip that came with your pickleball paddle and keep your grip dry with these overgrips.
2 - how and why to apply lead tape to your pickleball paddle - you can achieve better balance, improve power, move the sweet spot, and reduce pickleball paddle twist with lead tape.
3 - how and why to apply edge guard tape to your paddle - prolong your paddle's life and keep the lead tape covered (if you applied lead tape).
Check out the video and get better results with your paddle.
Good luck out there.

Swingweight is not a concept that is commonly spoken of in pickleball but is well-defined in other sports.
The DIYGolfer.com defines it as follows:
I can say it most simply, swing-weight is how the club “feels” in your hand.
In an article on Tennis Warehouse University, Crawford Lindsey defines it more technically as follows:
Swingweight is a measurement of a racquet's resistance to being rotated about an axis going through your hand. A low swing weight makes it easy for the player to swing the racquet (maneuverable). But it also makes it easy for the ball to move the racquet, resulting in loss of power.
The author then suggests an approach to understand the concept:
1. Swing your paddle normally (holding it from the grip)
2. Turn the paddle around (hold it from the top of the paddle) and swing it.
You should be able to tell the difference in the weight of the paddle each time.
Swingweight is derived from three factors:
1. The paddle's total weight; Obviously, the heavier the paddle, the harder it will be to swing (think of a 12 oz wood paddle vs. a 7.5 oz honeycomb paddle).
2. the paddle’s head balance (how much of the paddle’s weight is shifted towards the top as opposed to the bottom). Think of paddle balance like this: your paddle measures 16 inches long, making the middle of the paddle 8 inches from either top or bottom. If your paddle was evenly balanced, you could lay the middle line of your paddle(the 8 in. mark) on the edge of another paddle you were holding, and it would balance in place. A head heavy paddle will balance at a point that is closer to the head than the bottom. And a headlight paddle (which we have not yet come across) will balance closer to the bottom than the head. Below we discuss how you can calculate your own paddle’s head balance; and
3. total paddle length. The longer the paddle, the higher the swing weight. Think of trying to whip around a 30-inch paddle even if it is evenly balanced.
A real-world example. The ProKennex Kinetic Pro Speed has a head balance score of +11. This translates to the actual balance point being 1 3/8” closer to the head than the even balance point. This means that more of the paddle’s total weight is concentrated close to the top than the paddle's bottom. The weight concentration increases the swing weight of the paddle.
This is not a good or bad result. It is just a result. It allows us to compare paddles with each other.
Take another paddle that is 15 3/8” long (same as the Pro Kennex) and has the same gross weight (8.1 oz). But this paddle has a head balance score of 14. We would expect this second paddle's swing weight to be higher (heavier feeling) than the Pro Kennex. If the score of the second paddle was 7, we would expect it to feel much lighter.
The paddle characteristic we are really interested in is swing weight. Head balance is one factor that determines a paddle’s swing weight.
On one last note, you can use lead tape to move your paddle's actual balance point, either closer to the top (heavier) or grip (lighter). Curiously, you can lower the swing weight of your paddle by making the overall paddle weight heavier.

Popping up your pickleball dinks? It is likely because of your paddle swing. Specifically, too much backswing in your pickleball shots.
Same happens with your pickleball volleys. You are missing them long or into the net - sometimes missing them outright. Too much swing in your shots.
In this video we demonstrate this common cause of errors in your dinks and volleys. We also show you how to fix the errors by adopting a pickleball swing that is the least you need to get the job done. And that is how you will reduce the errors in all your shots.

No 2 Error in Pickleball - How This Error can have a Negative Impact on Every Point you Play
In this video, we go delve into the No. 2 Error in Pickleball to explain how this error can have a negative impact on every point you play. Pickleball is defined by the No Volley Zone (kitchen or NVZ). In order to play proper pickleball, you need to stand as close to the kitchen or NVZ line as possible. Standing here will make your shots easier and will also apply pressure on your opponents, allowing you to play winning pickleball.

Pickleball Point Breakdown - Learn to Avoid the Pickleball Pop Up
In this video, we're going to talk about one of the most feared events that happen on a pickleball court: the pop up. We're going to focus on movement and shot selection decisions that resulted in the pop up, allowing the team on the far side of the screen to slam it, ending the rally.
If you want more tips on how to reduce your pop ups, make sure you join CJ Johnson and me for our free webinar on how to reduce pop ups in your game link above and below to the free webinar.
https://www.wearepickleball.com/pl/257739
This is from the 2017 USA Pickleball Association Nationals, a 4.5 women's match. And this is a bronze medal match. No criticism is intended of any of the players on the court.
The first thing I want to focus on is a shot selection. The player chooses to hit a driven ball down the middle. Generally speaking, these areas here, high in the middle, are what I would consider areas that you really want to try and stay away from. Because the ball goes up into that zone, allowing the player crosscourt to slam down on it. As soon as that player can slam down on it, it puts a puts the players on this side closest to us into a terrible spot because now the players on this site are on their heels and having to dig balls, even though the pop up and slam is what ultimately ended the rally.
You can look at things like this during rallies; these kinds of shot selection decisions are made during rallies that then snowball into ultimately resulting in the end being a pop up and a slam. But the problem in the slam usually is occasioned by something that occurred before. In this case, the shot down the middle, allowing the other team to slam down on it, creates a movement situation for the team on this site, ultimately resulting in the pop up and the slam.
Next, let's look at how the shot selection puts the team on this site at a disadvantage in its positioning and movement. This is an essential part of the game.
The players on the other side of the net have taken the Non Volley Zone line. There's no space between their feet and the line. They're taking the best position possible on the court.
The players on this site have given up some space, and there is space between the Non Volley Zone line and their feet. Space ultimately becomes critical in how the popup is developed and the rally's loss by the team closest to us.
It's important to recognize - critical, I would say - to recognize that the serving team, which is the team farthest from us, has now gained the advantage. The return team is now on its heels and has lost its advantage. The script effectively has been flipped where the service team now has a positional advantage relative to the return team. Understanding the relative positional advantages or disadvantages of the serve and return team is critical to sound pickleball play. It's something that we spend a lot of time on.
The player opposite her is off of the Non Volley Zone line, giving space for her to hit into. This shot pulls the player to her left out of balance, and being out of balance ultimately results in the pop up that sets the ball up for the slam.
It would not be a point break down without a little extra credit at the end. Maybe you noticed this at the beginning of the rally. Maybe you did not. It's essential to hit your returns to serve deep in this case. The player on the right, the returner, hits a short return of serve that allows the opponent on the other side to come in and have an easier third shot and get to the Non Volley Zone line sooner rather than later. You want to make sure you return to serve are deep to avoid this sort of advantage or giving up an advantage to the service team.
The two takeaways that I want to give you that you can take away from this video for the next time you play our number one hit your shots with intentionality. Know where and why you're hitting the ball to a certain spot. And number two, it's making sure you're hitting from a solid foundation, trying to avoid reaching too far in front of you, and losing balance when you hit the ball. And remember, for more tips on reducing pop ups in your game, you can check out our Free VIPickleball webinar at the link above and below.
Stay well out there.

Improve your game!
This channel is dedicated to all the gold seeking Pickleballers out there who dink responsibly and stay out of the kitchen. We have all levels come through the channel, but we concentrate on the 4.0, 4.5 and up to 5.5 with the pros.
I started this channel quite by accident, I was recording my games to do film study and get better. I did not have time or money for lessons from pro pickleball coach, so I started watching all my screwups. People that I was playing with started to ask if they could watch too and I said sure. That helped all of us a lot to improve our game, strategy, mental toughness, and techniques. Now we have new pickleball videos published several times a week. We occasionally have pro pickleball players on the channel. Mostly its non pro pickleball players on their quest to 5.0 pickleball. We have all levels come through the channel, but we concentrate on the 4.0 pickleball, 4.5 pickleball and up to 5.5 pickleball with the pros.
