Pickleball Partner Staying Back? || Do you stay back too?
#pickleball

Learn more about VIPickleball at wearepickleball.com.

Has this ever happened to you? You're playing pickleball, particularly in recreational play, and you're running up to the Non Volley Zone line, but your partner stays back on the third shot. What happens? You get smashed with that.

We will talk about thin videos in the video and what you do when your Pickleball partner does not move up with you on the pickleball court.

This is a pretty common situation, particularly in rec play.

What do you do when you're moving up the Non Volley Zone line, but your partner insists on staying back at the baseline or playing the rally from the baseline?

What can you do in this situation, specifically in recreation play? In a tournament or competitive play where you know your partner, you can have a conversation with your partner about maybe recognizing your shot or recognizing your movement up and moving up with you. In recreation play, it can be a little more complicated.

Sometimes personalities get in the way. Sometimes you just don't know the person that well. And some players, frankly, still think that they can play successful pickleball from the baseline. If you're watching the video which I showed, you probably understand that it's not a recipe for success when you're playing pickleball.
So what do you do in that situation?
What I recommend in this situation where you have a partner who simply will not come up to the Non Volley Zone line with you is to playback with that player.

Let's address what happens when you're up, and your partner is back. One, some angles open up.
By having one up, one back, that angle of attack opens up, an angle that does not exist if you are both up or back.

The other thing that will happen if you're up you will get hit with the ball o is that your partner does not hit a good ball from the ball. So the only balls that you're really going to see if you're in this formation where your Pickleball partner is not coming up, you're going to be just receiving hard balls over and over and over again. If that's the case, you're better off being back to defend against those balls.

Another good reason to be back is that it lets you work on other parts of your Pickleball game. If you have a Pickleball partner that is not moving up with you to the Non Volley Zone line on a good third shot, it's going to be really difficult to win that game. It's just going to be really, really difficult to win that game. A 1 up 1 back-formation is not conducive to winning pickleball games.

Now, if you stay back, you're probably still going to lose the game, but you'll have the advantage of being able to work on different shots or different parts of your game. You can work on your third shots from the baseline. If you're in the transition zone, you can work on your defense and also resetting. So basically dropping balls into the Non Volley Zone from this position.

It gives you the ability to work on something as opposed to standing up and just getting pelted with balls over and over and over again. So generally speaking, if you have a Pickleball partner who's staying back, the best solution is for you to stay back roughly level with that partner, create a wall and just work from there.

A follow-up question I get asked is what happens when my partner asks me why I'm not moving up?
My answer there is fairly simple, “I'm simply going to stay with you. Wherever you want to play, I'm going to play. If you want to move up, I'm happy to be up there with you. But if you choose not to move up, if you choose to play in this sort of zone, then you're going to find me in that same zone with you creating this defensive wall and working on a shot from that position.”

The other thing is that you're likely to get more balls because if you're up, the only ball that I'm going to hit towards you is a put-away. If you're back, then I might feed you a ball because you're not attacking me.

Next time you're playing, and you have a partner who won't move up to the Non Volley Zone line, hang back with your partner and play from there.

Good luck out there.

Popping up your pickleball dinks? It is likely because of your paddle swing. Specifically, too much backswing in your pickleball shots.

Same happens with your pickleball volleys. You are missing them long or into the net - sometimes missing them outright. Too much swing in your shots.

In this video we demonstrate this common cause of errors in your dinks and volleys. We also show you how to fix the errors by adopting a pickleball swing that is the least you need to get the job done. And that is how you will reduce the errors in all your shots.

0:00 The top source of your pickleball errors
1:12 The backswing in your pickleball dink that is causing your popups
3:00 How compact can you make your pickleball paddle swing on your dink?
3:54 The best swing for a longer shot - like a pickleball serve
4:56 The best swing for your pickleball volley

A pickleball paddle that is too heavy for you can lead to poor play (too slow to get it in position) and potential arm pain (more weight = more stress to your arm). While the weight of your paddle is important (scale weight), the weight of your paddle as it swings is actually more important (swing weight).
In this video we share with you how to calculate your paddle's balance. Just how head-heavy is your pickleball paddle?

No 2 Error in Pickleball - How This Error can have a Negative Impact on Every Point you Play

In this video, we go delve into the No. 2 Error in Pickleball to explain how this error can have a negative impact on every point you play. Pickleball is defined by the No Volley Zone (kitchen or NVZ). In order to play proper pickleball, you need to stand as close to the kitchen or NVZ line as possible. Standing here will make your shots easier and will also apply pressure on your opponents, allowing you to play winning pickleball.

Chances are you that you are not playing your best pickleball right now. If so, it a likely culprit is lack of intentionality.

Pickleball players who hit the right shots and are in the right place every time are players who are being intentional.

You too can add intentionality to your pickleball game (and life). It takes a little bit of work but, just like any muscle, you can make it stronger. You will play better pickleball - it is, frankly, the only way.

In this pickleball video, I share different ways you can add intentionality, starting with your court position and growing into how you prepare to play each day. Add one thing at a time.

0:00 Introduction to the Powerful Pickleball Technique for your Mind
1:04 Tip 1 - Be Intentional where you stand on the court
1:30 Tip 2 - Be Intentional with your shots
2:03 Tip 3 - Be intentional when you get to the courts
2:44 Tip 4 - Start intentionality on your way to the pickleball courts
3:10 Tip 5 - Intentionality is everything you do to play your best pickleball and live your best life

Avoid this Pickleball Mistake: Predictability and Over-Targeting in Pickleball Game

In this video, we explore the limitations of over-targeting in a pickleball game. Limiting your area of play and allowing an opponent to camp out in the middle of the court can prove to be the wrong strategy.

This video features Simone Jardim and Corrine Carr against Irina Tereschenko and Christine McGrath in the Women's Pro Gold Medal Match at the 2018 SoCal Classic in Encinitas, CA.
Thank you to Mofia Pickleball for allowing us the use of the video.

Nothing in these videos is intended as a criticism of the players. We appreciate their efforts on the court; efforts that allow us to learn how to be better players.
