Pickleball is an extremely strategic sport. Players who really understand how to play pickleball know how to move the ball, hit the ball, know the advantages and disadvantages of certain types of shots, and capitalize on the opportunities they get. They're able to keep the opportunities given to the other team as low as possible.

The knowledge that these players bring to the game is what we fairly characterize as a pickleball strategy. It is the things that make the difference between a really, really good player and a player who might look like he or she has all the shots but doesn't really understand the game and doesn't understand how to build a point or build a rally successfully, how to minimize the opportunities that they're giving up to the opponent and how to capitalize on the opportunities that the opponents are giving to them.

A concrete example of how understanding a pickleball strategy can help you improve your game. One area where a lot of players make mistakes and where they can clearly improve their game significantly is missing fourth shots. Those types of errors are capital "E" Errors, the kind of error that you just can't have in your game if you want to succeed in pickleball.

When I first started playing pickleball, I was told the cardinal sin was missing a serve. I was told you never want to miss a serve. And, obviously, nobody wants to serve. I'll agree with that. But it's not the cardinal sin. It's not the number one error, not even the number two error. And to suggest that, in my opinion, misses the mark in terms of understanding pickleball and how a pickleball game is built.

The one thing you cannot do in pickleball is missing a return of serve. I think that's pretty simple, and everybody would agree with that.

The second thing you cannot do in pickleball, however, is missing the fourth shot. Here's why. The Serve team hasn't done anything at that stage of the rally to deserve the rally but deserve a point. At the time that you missed the fourth shot, you were in complete control of the rally. You're the return team. You're up in the non-volley zone, and you have control of that situation.

When you miss the fourth shot, you're giving up your advantage. You're basically conceding your advantage. But worse yet, you're giving the serving team a point.

Think about it this way. You can miss eleven, twelve, thirteen, serves in a game and still win the game. You normally will not miss eleven, twelve, or thirteen fourth shots and still win the game.

It's a fairly simple thing to understand, a fairly simple part of pickleball that a player can understand and hopefully fix in their game. But it just gives you an example of how understanding pickleball strategy, understanding the fundamentals of pickleball, and how pickleball works can help you as a player, become better at the game, not give away free points and be more successful as a pickleball player.

Playing Pickleball on a Tennis Court | NO Permanent Lines Needed | In2Pickle

Timestamps - Playing Pickleball on a Tennis Court
00:00 - Intro: Playing on a Tennis Court
00:55 - Start with a plain Tennis Court
01:50 - Do not Mark a Court without Permission
02:20 - Use Cones or Other Removal Markers
08:30 - Lay Out the Court

Want to play pickleball but do not have courts nearby. No problem.
Is there a tennis court available?
With some strips or cones, you are ready to go.

A whole pickleball court is only 2 feet longer than a tennis court’s service boxes. The singles lines on a tennis court (the long lines running down the court nearest to the center of the court) are each only 3 ½ feet wider than the long lines along with a pickleball court. You probably see where I’m going with this.

In order to play pickleball on a tennis court, you will need at least a few cones or other markers (you can use water bottles, clothing, or pretty much anything that will not permanently or semi-permanently mark the court). We do not advise using chalk, paint, tape (or other permanent or semi-permanent markings) without the permission of the court owner or manager.

An easy way to mark the pickleball lines on a tennis court is to use short rubber strips that are specifically designed for this purpose. The strips have the advantage of being relatively inexpensive, easy to store and transport, less obstructive on the court, and overall providing a better playing experience.

Some guidelines for how to play pickleball on a tennis court that does not have a pickleball line on it (if any doubt, check out our diagram showing you these steps):
- The service box lines that run parallel to the net will be the baseline (backline) of your pickleball court.
- The centerline of the service box will be the centerline of your pickleball court.
- For the sidelines of your pickleball court, you have two options:
- The recommended option is to mark off a sideline 3 ½ feet from each of the singles lines on the tennis court. You can do this by just walking it off – just remember to use the same person’s foot for each line. You can then place a few cones or other markers along the sideline. Line calls will be approximate, just give the benefit of the doubt to the ball being “In.”

Another option is using the singles lines from the tennis court as your sidelines. This option makes the court much wider than a regulation pickleball court and will require much more side-to-side movement. This option should only be used if you don’t have enough cones for other markers and are physically able to cover the additional court.
You will also need to mark off the kitchen; no volley zone as it is more formally called. This is the only part of the court that you must mark off in order to play pickleball. After all, the kitchen is what makes pickleball. To mark off the no volley zone, you will walk off 7 feet from the net towards the baseline and drop your markers there. We recommend using 2 to 3 markers, one along each sideline where it intersects the kitchen line and one on the centerline, as long as it does not unreasonably interfere with play. Stating the obvious, make sure your markers do not create a safety risk for you or your fellow players.

The last thing you will do is to lower the tennis net 2 inches in the middle. This step is optional – you can play pickleball with a 36-inch net and doing so will make the regulation net seem much easier. To do this, you will slide the tennis net Center strap to one side approximately an inch or so. We do not recommend making permanent alterations to the tennis net center strap and further recommend placing the strap back into its original position at the end of the play. Leaving the strap over to one side can cause the net to lose tension affecting both tennis players and future pickleball play.

To play the game, you will follow the normal rules of pickleball with one exception and one recommendation. The exception is that if the ball comes into contact with any marker on the court, the point is replayed (we refer to this as a “let”). The recommendation is that the benefit of the doubt is given on both “out” calls as well as kitchen violation calls. Our objective is to get some exercise and hopefully enjoy the game and it would be a shame for that to be overshadowed by close line calls.

That’s it. Suit up, grab your paddle and balls (if you need any of these you can find them at www.In2Pickle.com/store), and go play the new tennis on your neighborhood tennis court.

A quick tip about how to avoid this pickleball error.
You can watch more videos on avoiding unforced errors here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2izVppGTzss&list=PLRe6hjjhF-o6Y5biMecyuFQCPXZKIAXoT

This error tends to happen during return of serve and during third shots; players will rush in towards the incoming ball. In addition to causing errors it actually makes the incoming shot faster. Let the ball peak and then strike it. You will reduce your errors and gain more control over your shots.

Do You Know How to Score More Pickleball Points by Hitting Your Third Shot at the Right Spot?
What is the right spot? All things being equal, the right spot is to the returner.

The returner is normally not yet at the no volley zone (kitchen) and also is moving. The NVZ player is already at the NVZ and is also not moving.

In this video we show you why going at the returner/moving player is the optimal choice (again, all things being equal - want to know what I mean by this? I will surely write a blog about it in the next few days).

Good luck out there

Partner staying back after their return? USE THIS TIP | VIPickleball

It happens. You are up at the Non-Volley Zone Line and your partner is back returning serve. The return lands on the opposite side of the court and the third shot is hit. Where is your partner???? Back at the baseline.

In this video we give you a concrete tip you can use to help when this happens and explain the reasoning behind it.

If you use it, let us know how it goes - in particular what sort of comment did your partner give you? Should be good :).

Also, let us know what you are working on in the comments. Also if you have any issues that seem to haunt your pickleball game, let us know. Perhaps there is a video answering it in your future.

You DO NOT NEED Spins to have good pickleball shots | School of Hard Truths | WeArePickleball

Pickleball players think they need to spin the ball to be successful. Spins are not required and, in fact, can hurt your game.

A fundamental stroke mechanic is the key. You want to have repeatable consistent shots. Get those first. Add spins later ... if you want.

Pickleball Scoring: How to Score in 5 Shots in Pickleball - A measure of PICKLEBALL SUCCESS

You are a competent pickleball player. You understand the difference between the pickleball serve and the pickleball return. Not just the shots. The strategies that apply to each.

Timestamps: How to Score in 5 Shots in
00:00 - Intro of this video - How to Score in 5 Shots
00:27 - Meaning of 5 shots
03:23 - Step 01: An Effective/Aggressive 3rd Shot
04:20 - Can I execute an "attacking" 3rd Shot?
05:25 - Step 02: Moving forward to finish
07:30 - Use Scoring in 5 shot as a Performance Metric
08:05 - Tip 01: 3rd Shot hit at the returner
08:50 - Tip 02: Third shot hit at the corners
09:45 - Tip 03: The Non-Hitter Moves to Attack
10:05 - Tip 04: Recognize the Light going Green
10:50 - Practical View
10:55 - Last Tip: Attack all Short Returns

What metrics are you using to determine whether you are playing efficient serve or return pickleball? Are you evaluating fourth shot success? Depth of shots? Ease of your opponents acquiring the Non-Volley Zone?

In this video, we give you a measure you can use to determine how efficient you are on the pickleball rally's serve side.

Scoring in 5 shots means that you hit an effective attack 3rd shot (long dink) AND that your team moved forward to finish the rally with the put-away shot.

The only way you can score in 5 shots is to meet both these requirements. There is simply no other way to score a pickleball point in 5 shots.

This video provides you with specific tips you can use to locate your 3rd shot (long dink) to apply more stress on the return team. Our pickleball tips are for both player selection and location. The objective of this shot is to hopefully generate an attackable fourth shot from the return team.

We also give you some pickleball tips about moving after the 3rd shot to take advantage of the opportunity. The player who can move the best on the serve team does not hit the 3rd shot. This player should be ready to move up on a good 3rd shot to attack any resulting pop-up.

None of this is to say that you should just charge in after the pickleball 3rd shot. If it is high, then you want to stay back and defend.
Here is a video going over just that:
https://youtu.be/Bc3UU3NziOU

At the end of the video, we give you a specific scenario that sets you up well to score in five.

This video is part of our Project 4.0 Series. Not yet a 4.0?
You can be. Follow Project 4.0 for more.

Keep working at it.

You know the pickleball net has a negative side to it - it is the one that we hit the ball into to end the rally. BUT ... the pickleball net also has a positive side. It is one you can use to protect yourself from attack.

In this pickleball video, we explain the positive net to you and show you how to use the net when you are:

1 - hitting you third shot drops
2 - dinking up at the Non-Volley Zone
3 - in trouble (any time you are in trouble)

Bonus Tip - you can use the net to protect you against bangers. Use the net to create an out angle on their shot - or force the banger to hit their ball into the net. Give it a try.

Use the net to set up your pickleball defense and you will start to play your best piclkleball.
