In this video, a game between 3.0 players, players who actually know they are 3.0 players. It's refreshing to know there are players who do not have an exaggerated opinion of their play. There are a number of things that make them 3.0, things that are easily correctable. Check it out and learn from watching.
This past Saturday, Florissant Parks and Recreation Department held their Glow in the Dark Pickleball Tournament at the James J. Eagan Center! A fantastically set-up gym combined with a great turnout produced an amazing event! Thank you to everyone that made this tournament possible and to everyone who came out to play!
This week I’m joined by Gabe Joseph. In addition to being a standout professional player on tour, Gabe is a tennis and pickleball pro at Calabasas Tennis and Swim Center. We talk about growing up in the valley, coaching, his new paddle sponsor, singles vs doubles, and some of the realities of playing pro pickleball.
In part 2 Gabe talks more about his experience on the pro tour. He recounts a few of his highs and openly breaks down one of the toughest losses of his career and discusses what he has taken from it. We also get a sneak peek at what he has on the horizon and hear what this game means to him.

Paddle and Body Preparation
A pickleball stroke has three parts: backswing (see below), point of contact (when you hit the ball), and follow through (after you have made contact with the ball).
In a prior video, linked below, we suggested that by mastering the follow through you could greatly improve your pickleball play. There was some resistance to this concept. The counterargument was primarily that because the ball has left the paddle the remaining follow through was not relevant to the ball's trajectory. The argument continues that the only relevant part of the pickleball stroke is the point where the paddle makes contact with the ball (the point of contact) and the paddle face angle at that point.
In this video we demonstrate the effect of the paddle follow through on the shot and how varying the follow through impacts the ball's trajectory. We also show how you can use the follow through to shape your pickleball shot and help with the service yips.

A good paddle grip is key to playing your best pickleball. The grip is the link between your body and the ball (through the paddle of course). In this video we compare the continental grip to the western grip and show you the advantages of the continental grip.

In this video we clarify the two types of underspin: 1- the arcing underspin that will brake or checkup and 2- the drive underspin that will skid on the court and stay low (generally seen as a return of serve shot).
It is important to have a good understanding of the different spins that are used in the game so that you can move accordingly.

How should you grip your pickleball paddle? The continental grip is the most versatile grip you can use in pickleball. In this video we discuss the pros and cons of the continental and western grips in pickleball and show – hopefully – why the continental grip is the better option. At the end of the video we give you a tip for sticking with the continental grip.

Respect the "X" - UPDATED - The Pickleball Strategy You Need for 2022 | WeArePickleball
Early on in our path as pickleball instructors we started to notice a common error: players from one side of the court crossing over to hit a shot on the other side of the court.
To be clear, this is not always an error. There are plenty of times where crossing over makes sense: covering the middle and lob coverage are two easy examples.
BUT …
Crossing over for the sake of crossing over or because of some “forehand takes the middle” idea often leads to errors. And unnecessary ones.
Unnecessary because you have control over whether you break the X or, instead, respect it.
Perhaps the most common form of not respecting the X that is causing your team to lose rallies is the player on one side coming over to take a third shot drop that properly belongs to their teammate if the team was Respecting the X. The most common reason given for this is “forehand in the middle.” This is an error (lowercase “e” error if you want to look at it that way, which is what we do inside WeArePickleball).
Three reasons it is an error:
1. It is a more difficult shot, mechanically, for the player coming over to hit the third shot. This player is reaching away to hit the ball. Their teammate would be hitting a ball coming into their body.
2. The player coming over leaves their side of the court open and vulnerable to attack.
3. The one very few players know: they “pin” their teammate back behind their shot. The pinned player cannot move forward and attack if appropriate.
The X applies at the NVZ line and also in defensive settings. These are all covered in this video.
There are times when you can break the X – specifically, whenever there is a shot that makes more sense to be taken irrespective of the X. Think of a poaching opportunity where one player will come across to attack a high ball. That is an example of breaking the X, with a purpose.
As you develop as a pickleball player, adding these sorts of pickleball strategies will significantly help you. Seeing the game better will mean you are playing the game better.
Let’s keep working at it.

Make sure you are balanced when you serve. And learn how to transfer weight into the shot.
It is important to generate sufficient power to get your serve deep. While we are not concerned with serve speed for Project 4.0, we are concerned with serve depth. You will need to be able to transfer enough energy into the ball in order to send that ball deep.
This is part of our stroke mechanics video series for Project 4.0.
