'It's good cardio, which we all need': Pickleballers ring in the New Year on the court
----
WACO, Texas — If you're still contemplating a New Year's resolution, consider adding pickleball to your list. Over the weekend preceding the New Year, a local Pickleball group gathered on the court to raise funds for new equipment, supporting their ongoing community outreach initiatives.
Pastor David Brower of Central United Methodist Church embraced pickleball a few weeks ago through the "Awesome Pickleball Outreach" program, viewing it as a more appealing alternative to the traditional gym setting. He believes participating in the pickleball group provides an opportunity for community members to connect with one another.
For those interested in taking up the sport, 'Awesome Pickleball Outreach' convenes every Monday and Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Beginners' sessions are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., with competitive meets scheduled from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
In a recent broadcast script, Pastor David Brower expressed, "No one wants to go and work out at a gym by themselves and have to figure out what to do." Having joined the "Awesome Pickleball Outreach" program, Brower highlighted the enjoyable and inclusive nature of pickleball, catering to people of all ages and skill levels.
Describing pickleball as a fun and accessible way to stay healthy, Brower emphasized its cardiovascular benefits, making it an ideal option for those averse to gym intimidation. He added, "You can play for as little or as long as you want. It's good cardio, which we all need, and this is the perfect opportunity to have fun while you're working out. So it doesn't really feel like a workout."
Van Davis, the Director of Awesome Pickleball Outreach, echoed this sentiment, aiming to bring pickleball to smaller communities that may be unfamiliar with the sport. Davis emphasized the program's goal of creating a lively, active atmosphere for families entering the New Year together.
"We want the whole family to participate, not just husbands and wives. We encourage families with children to come and play and be active together," said Davis.
For Pastor Brower, besides promoting physical health, pickleball serves as a means to foster connections within the community. "You get to learn each other's names. You come consistently, and you see the same faces, so you're going to build those relationships just around a fun game and a fun sport," he shared.
Proceeds from the recent tournament will contribute to purchasing new paddles and balls, supporting the continuation of the free outreach program. For those interested in joining, 'Awesome Pickleball Outreach' offers sessions every Monday, Wednesday, Tuesday, and Thursday, catering to various skill levels and preferences.
