Ready position Preparation Swing

“On your mark, get set, Go!” was first used in the 1800’s to start a foot race. Another common variation used is “ready, set, go.” ?‍♂️

Use this sequence as a reminder for three areas of movement on the pickleball court. Even though it’s a fast paced game we should be transitioning through all three of these movements.

1. READY - OUR READY POSITION
2. SET - OUR PREPARATION
3. GO - OUR SWING

With the same concentration and focus of a sprinter at the start of a race, we must also work through these three elements to play a strong game.

As much as possible, these should be three distinct actions:

Ready position ➡️ Preparation ➡️ Swing

The most common mistake ❌ I see with beginners is late preparation. Meaning the player is late in bringing the paddle into their preparation position, ready to strike the ball.

Another common error is combining your late preparation and swing into one motion. Everything becomes more rushed and frantic and consequently, less consistent.

By preparing early and breaking up your movements means you are watching the ball for longer and waiting with a stable paddle face. The result will be a more consistent, controlled swing.

Decide as early as possible if it’s a forehand or backhand. Prepare immediately, then move your feet to get behind the flight path of the ball.
