Learn how to how to defend a pickleball lob properly with coach Joe Gmuer. Watch today pickleball TIP in our Instructional series. Stay tuned for more pickleball lessons!

Improve your game!
This channel is dedicated to all the gold seeking Pickleballers out there who dink responsibly and stay out of the kitchen. We have all levels come through the channel, but we concentrate on the 4.0s, 4.5s and up to 5.5s.
I started this channel quite by accident, I was recording my games to do film study and get better. I did not have time or money for lessons from pro pickleball coach, so I started watching all my screwups. People that I was playing with started to ask if they could watch too and I said sure. That helped all of us a lot to improve our game, strategy, mental toughness, and techniques. Now we have new pickleball videos published several times a week. We occasionally have pro pickleball players on the channel. Mostly its non pro pickleball players on their quest to 5.0 pickleball. We have all levels come through the channel: 4.0 pickleball, 4.5 pickleball and up to 5.5 pickleball with the pros.

Returning this lob in pickleball. This is a tougher shot than you may think. It is pretty fun and pretty fun pretty annoying too if you get lobbed all the time. Let's just look at the videotape. I always get a little too excited. What is wrong with this picture? You can see this all the time. Refs miss it, we miss calling it as opponents. What's wrong right there? The foot when he does that scissor kick! I bet he was a tennis player. He does the scissor kick, goes into the kitchen, commits a fault. A first point I want to bring up is this: Rich Lively hits the overhead. He stays out of the kitchen. How is he staying out of the kitchen? He's using that offhand his left hand to stay balanced. So basically he's using that off hand to stay balanced, and this is very effective. That will help you really be ready for the next shot. Here's me. I need to stay out of the kitchen. I'm doing this by using that left hand keeping my balance and by keeping my balance. I'm ready for the next shot. This is so important. It's a great tip, Sarah Ainsbury taught it to me, one of the best teachers in the nation. Thank you, Sarah! Next if you are having shoulder problems or having trouble, don't have enough time to hit that overhead, try using that sky hook. Lydia just hit it right here, Mark had hit it earlier in the point. I'm gonna go in slow motion so it's almost like a sky hook like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. This is a lot easier on the shoulder. I'd like to teach it to seniors. Mark, you’re senior, and Lydia, you're not quite a senior, probably 33. Super nice, she lives at the villages. This is really effective, and I'd like coaching this to people with shoulder problems. The next point I want to make: when someone lobs you, run around it. Don't try to be too offensive, either hit a drop, or lob. That's exactly what Eric Gagnon did in this point. This is men's Senior Pro. He doesn't try to hit a really offensive shot where he probably will miss. He takes his medicine they get back in the point, and they have a fair shot at winning the point. This is very important. Don't try an offensive shot in a defensive situation! Here is an incredible drop off a lob by our very own Mark Napartovich. Rich Lively hits a lob. Mark runs back. He's nice and relaxed, he's taking his medicine, he knows he has to hit a nice drop. If you look at the arc he hits on this. It's a decent arc I mean that is a good six feet above the net. I mean that's high, he puts actually a little top spin on it, and he gets right back into the point. So do not panic really, take your time, put good arc, and life's gonna be okay. Ladies and gentlemen, I truly enjoy doing this. Thank you so much for watching. Please comment and please subscribe. This really does give my life meaning when you comment and subscribe and like the videos. My life is better, I see brighter colors, I'm less depressed. Everyone have a great day!

This video is part of a 3-part series. The first 2 videos covered pickleball spins and their real impact on your shots as well as showed you the wrong way to spin the ball (more commonly used than you might think).

Video 1 answered whether spins were right for your pickleball game (spoiler – probably not right now). Find Video 1 here: https://youtu.be/q2vFlCg76cI

Video 2 showed you a common mistake made by players trying to impart spin onto the ball. Find Video 2 here: https://youtu.be/rOuj2akU_9A

In this week's video we show you how to properly impart spin on the pickleball. Before you move on, we recommend you watch Videos 1 and 2 in this series first. They are in this order for a reason.

There's a decent chance that you are already doing some of the pickleball technique shown in Video 3 (this video). The key is to understand how it is this technique – and not the windshield wiper (or similar) technique – that is generating the pickleball spin you are looking for.

Remember:

Pretty much every shot you hit in pickleball will impart some spin to the ball. It is just how things work. As the pickleball paddle makes contact and pushes forward and through the ball to propel the ball along its intended shot trajectory, some of that paddle motion will make the ball (a sphere) spin in some direction.

The key is to understand this mechanic. This way you will stop doing the things that do not work and cause pickleball errors and instead focus on what works.

Spins are fine and are part of pickleball. The issue is not with the spin itself. The pickleball errors come from adding that extra extra spin you may think you are adding by flicking the wrist or brushing up (or down) across the pickleball.

By understanding the proper mechanics of pickleball spin you can appreciate the manner in which you are actually spinning the pickleball and avoid potential distraction that will lead to more errors in your pickleball game.

Have fun out there.

0:37 Errors in hitting a Pickleball Topspin Shot
0:59 How to properly spin a pickleball to minimize pickleball errors

Want to know how to hit a third shot drop (long dink) in pickleball? In this video you can learn from our breakdown of Matt's mechanically simple ad consistent third shot drop. Matt can execute the same shot over and over again and, because the shot does not have many moving parts, it is not subject to error.

In this series we will be breaking down particular shots at which certain players excel. These are not “how to” videos but rather videos to highlight aspects of the shots so that you can perhaps incorporate some of them and improve your shot repertoire.

If you want to improve your dinking at the no volley zone (kitchen), you need to learn how to maintain a solid foundation while dinking. This includes shuffling along the NVZ line so that you are not stretched (pulled over) too far. Being stretched can result in pop ups and in being unable to defend agains the pop up.

We look at some pro level play to see how they avoid the stretch pop up.

Good luck out there

Win more points through nothing more than fundamentals. In this video we explore what happens when the return team keeps the serve team back during a pickleball point. Nothing fancy. Just keeping opponents back.

Want to win more pickleball points? Then you need to know what went right and also what went wrong when you play a pickleball point. In this video, we break down specific pickleball points to explore the pickleball fundamentals that led to the outcome.

And we look at each point from both sides, the pickleball serve and the pickleball return (vastly different worlds). Was it just an amazing shot by one player? Or, more likely, was it a culmination of shots and decisions on both sides that led to the result?

These sorts of matches are great tests. One team is ahead for a bit. Then the other team surges back. A tug of war ensues where each team is doing its best to pull the match across the net in its favor.

But, alas, in every sport (and pickleball is no exception) only one team can win the contest. Check out this awesome battle between 4 determined players giving their all.
