A common question is “where do I hold my paddle to be ready?” In our prior video, link below, we looked at the difference between the twelve o’clock and 10 (or 2 for lefties) o’clock schools of thought.

In this video we consider the overload of information given the most recent conversation about paddle height. Common wisdom was to hold the paddle chest or so high. “Keep the paddle up” is an oft heard refrain on the rec courts.

The current conversation challenges this wisdom suggesting that more of a hip level paddle position may be better. In a Pickleball Forum Facebook post (January 2019), DJ Howard explains that this is “the best ‘axis point’ from which to dink, block, punch, or swing quickly off either forehand or backhand sides.”

Even though the hip may provide the optimal “axis point” in terms of reacting to different shots, a chest high approach may work for some. An older player or a player with slower reaction time may benefit from having the paddle higher than hip level. A reason for this would be that most hard balls are hit towards a player above the hip level. As a result, the player with a higher paddle position will have the paddle closer to where he/she expects to have to deal with the driven ball.

In the end, hold the paddle at a level that is comfortable for you but have the paddle ready. Do not let the paddle dangle by your side. You will not be ready for the next shot.

Do You Want to Know How We Love to Neutralize the Advantage of the Return Team? | Pickleball Scoring

As the serving team, we want to get up to the kitchen (No Volley Zone) line. That is how we neutralize the advantage of the return team and hopefully score a point.

Most of us were taught to get up there at all costs. This approach, however, can result in exposing your team to unnecessary attacks. If you or your partner hit a high (or otherwise attackable) third shot, moving forward makes it easier for your opponent to hit a putaway shot. Moving forward before your partner also creates gaps in your line.

Bottom line: before you rush forward, wait, and see how your partner hits his/her shot. Then you can either move forward or stay back, in either case giving yourself the best chance to win the point.

You DO NOT NEED Spins to have good pickleball shots | School of Hard Truths | WeArePickleball

Pickleball players think they need to spin the ball to be successful. Spins are not required and, in fact, can hurt your game.

A fundamental stroke mechanic is the key. You want to have repeatable consistent shots. Get those first. Add spins later ... if you want.

Pickleball is an extremely strategic sport. Players who really understand how to play pickleball know how to move the ball, hit the ball, know the advantages and disadvantages of certain types of shots, and capitalize on the opportunities they get. They're able to keep the opportunities given to the other team as low as possible.

The knowledge that these players bring to the game is what we fairly characterize as a pickleball strategy. It is the things that make the difference between a really, really good player and a player who might look like he or she has all the shots but doesn't really understand the game and doesn't understand how to build a point or build a rally successfully, how to minimize the opportunities that they're giving up to the opponent and how to capitalize on the opportunities that the opponents are giving to them.

A concrete example of how understanding a pickleball strategy can help you improve your game. One area where a lot of players make mistakes and where they can clearly improve their game significantly is missing fourth shots. Those types of errors are capital "E" Errors, the kind of error that you just can't have in your game if you want to succeed in pickleball.

When I first started playing pickleball, I was told the cardinal sin was missing a serve. I was told you never want to miss a serve. And, obviously, nobody wants to serve. I'll agree with that. But it's not the cardinal sin. It's not the number one error, not even the number two error. And to suggest that, in my opinion, misses the mark in terms of understanding pickleball and how a pickleball game is built.

The one thing you cannot do in pickleball is missing a return of serve. I think that's pretty simple, and everybody would agree with that.

The second thing you cannot do in pickleball, however, is missing the fourth shot. Here's why. The Serve team hasn't done anything at that stage of the rally to deserve the rally but deserve a point. At the time that you missed the fourth shot, you were in complete control of the rally. You're the return team. You're up in the non-volley zone, and you have control of that situation.

When you miss the fourth shot, you're giving up your advantage. You're basically conceding your advantage. But worse yet, you're giving the serving team a point.

Think about it this way. You can miss eleven, twelve, thirteen, serves in a game and still win the game. You normally will not miss eleven, twelve, or thirteen fourth shots and still win the game.

It's a fairly simple thing to understand, a fairly simple part of pickleball that a player can understand and hopefully fix in their game. But it just gives you an example of how understanding pickleball strategy, understanding the fundamentals of pickleball, and how pickleball works can help you as a player, become better at the game, not give away free points and be more successful as a pickleball player.

Watch this video to learn a simple pickleball practice drill you can do at home, alone against a wall. Glen did this drill one winter in his garage and it took his game to a whole new level. All you need is a wall, paddle and a ball.

This drill helps you work on the fundamentals of your stroke. Practice watching the ball. Practice aiming all of your shots. Practice, practice, practice!

Watch the video to end, you'll be amazed by Glen's fast hands.
